Dear LSBC Family,

I am Sow Yin from Youth Church and I would like to share my CP experience.  Our church organised a carnival for the Sengkang residents on 9 Nov 2019. Initially, the carnival was kind of lifeless as it was early in the afternoon. Slowly, the crowd started to trickle in and the atmosphere began to build up. I remember when I first arrived, the thought I had was, “Huh...CP again?” All I wanted was to sit on the red auditorium chair and doze off... just kidding! I did pay attention to the preacher!

At the carnival, I was in charge of the football game stall. I thought there were enough helpers so I went to join the befrienders team to host residents and bring them to each stall. That way, there was better interaction!

I realised that I really enjoyed interacting with the children, especially a little girl whom I was playing with. Her mom left her alone for about 10 minutes and she was walking around all by herself looking really scared so I became her temporary ‘mom’ and played games with her. Though she was pretty bad at the games, it looked like she had a lot of fun and that was all that mattered.

We also met an elderly lady who was super fit, cute and so full of energy! She was ready to play all the carnival games! It was quite rare to see a senior person so excited! She shared that she lived in one of the units above the void deck of the block where the carnival was held. She had come down to win some prizes and balloons for her grandkids. She even invited us up to her home for a chat. She shared with us photos of her children and grandchildren and kept feeding us a lot of food as any grandmother would! However, we could feel her loneliness as her children were all busy and her son did not interact with her much. We subsequently found out that her son actually didn’t like her getting too involved with “that Jesus life” or Christianity and so when we offered to pray for her, she gently rejected us. But I prayed for a seed to be sown in her and her son’s heart.

At the end of the day, I was glad that I went for that CP event even though it was really tiring. I was encouraged by the fact that the people living in Sengkang were opening up to us, and for the interactions I had with the residents. God calls us to spread his word to all the nations and CP is our first step! I hope that next time whenever there are any events or activities related to CP, we will look at it as taking a small step to build the kingdom of God!!!!  We can do this together!

Love, your neighbour

Leong Sow Yin

P.S. Sow Yin was brought to LSBC by her classmate when she was in secondary school and accepted Christ here. She is now a student at Ngee Ann Polytechnic.

More than just the form of doing community pastoring, today's sermon is a good reminder as to why we do it.

Reflection:

  1. What has my attitude towards pastoring the community been like?

  2. What changes do I want to see in my heart with regards to how I feel about the church community and the community that we pastor?

Response:

  1. What active steps can I take as an individual and together with my cell to build community within the cell/church, so that others may be drawn to Christ?

  2. What active steps can the cell take to pastor those in the community?

Dear LSBC Family,

Matthew 25:35-36 and 40 (NKJV)
35 for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in;

36 I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.’
40 And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’

I hold these verses deeply in my heart each time I do CP and mission work. These truths come alive when we serve with a heart to touch lives without any strings attached.

On one occasion, Rahab Uncle Poon had a heart surgery and we seized the opportunity to pray for him and blessed his family with some essential foodstuff to carry them through the tough period. They were deeply touched by our simple deed of kindness.

Rahab Uncle Lim is very open to our visits and prayers and he has started to say "Amen" whenever we end our blessing prayer. On a subsequent visit, he said the sinner’s prayer. Hallelujah! During one of our regular visits, we came to know that he was not well and was alone at home. Together in partnership with church staff, we visited him more frequently and volunteered to buy meals for him until he was admitted to hospital for heart surgery. Praise God for preserving him and he was very thankful for our care and love for him.

I just want to encourage all of us with this: we do not have to do Big Things but with a Big Heart for the community, we certainly can bring a smile to our King Lord Jesus!

Love, your neighbour
Doris Ng

P.S. Doris serves God’s people with gratitude and she is a joyful intercessor who backs up her CP work with much prayer for the residents.

Pray for the June CP blessing
• Acknowledge
We acknowledge that our nation is still battling with Covid-19 pandemic, our residents and church members have concerns for resurgence in community transmission. Above all, we acknowledge that GOD IS still in control.

• Battle
The battle belongs to DADDY. The COMMANDER of the LORD’s army will tell us what to do and when to go out and HIS love and compassion will not fail us.

Pray for LSBC members
• Captivated
Come back to our FIRST LOVE, to the SOURCE of love, to HIS heart and be captivated by it. With the same love that we have received, we will love.

• Delight
Ask for a new delight in CP, one that comes from a new understanding of HIS heart, a new level of passion and compassion for CP, and satisfaction in fulfilling HIS redemptive purpose.

• Engage
As we engage HIS heart in going out to the field, HE will open our eyes to see the needs, HE will enlarge our hearts to feel what HE feels and to act how he would have acted.

Dear LSBC Family,

It is my joy to share God’s heart in my CP journey. I mention “God’s heart” because I have learnt that I can only love others when I have received it from God.

My CP journey began at the age of 7 when I joined my parents’ cell to do door-knocking. They reached out to the residents and grew really close to them. Their joyous conversations and the sincerity in their friendship formed my first impression of CP.

Fast-forward to 2018, God revealed to me my life purpose through a vision. In that vision, I heard Him saying to me, “Disciple my people, Feed My sheep” three times. It was similar to the call that Jesus had for Peter in John 21:15-17. God impressed upon me that when the church loves the community, we are bridging the gap between believers and pre-believers. His heart for us and His lost sheep resounded so strongly in my heart that day, and I sealed it to remember His love for the lost ones. CP becomes a channel for me to share God’s unmerited love for me with those whom He has placed around me.

CP isn’t just about doing good deeds. We have to first understand God’s heart for us and receive His love before we are able to start loving others. When we have experienced His overflowing love, we cannot help but love His lost sheep. “Good things must share, right?” This is the Singaporean way of putting it. We cannot give what we do not have, so I am always asking God to break my heart for what breaks His and help me to understand His heart so that I can pour out into others. CP is a partnership with God to love the community and give them a glimpse of who God is and how much He loves them. After all, they are not just our community, but really God’s.

My greatest motivation in doing CP is that one day when my race is completed, and in heaven I will meet with the people whom I have reached out to on earth. What joy it is to know that they too have found God’s love in their lives!  I pray that you too, will feel His heart beat and be in partnership with Him to love the community who has been entrusted to our care.

Love, your neighbour

P.S. Sarah is a student at Uni-SIM. She lives at the block next to church and she remembers being the child at the door to receive the gifts when LSBC members came to do CP work.

  2. Today we learnt that it does not take a lot of money or experience to be able to pastor the community, rather a heart that seeks to reach the lost for the Lord. Would you make a decision today to take steps to reach out to the community around you and allow God to use you to bless them?

Dear LSBC family,

I would like to share my personal journey in CP. In the early years, besides participating in church-initiated CP activities, I would take the remaining gifts to bless my neighbours. I am thankful that the effort has yielded fruits. Sophia Chung, who was then unchurched, started worshipping in LSBC. She now works in the Church office, and serves as a cell leader in the Chinese Church. Sophia then reached out to her neighbour, June Goh. June accepted Christ and is Sophia’s colleague in the Church office. We have also witnessed another 4 neighbours joining LSBC, though not all have stayed on.

Recently, we were thrilled to learn that our former neighbours have also accepted Christ and are attending Paya Lebar Methodist Church. The couple expressed their appreciation that we have always made an effort to reach out to them.

When we moved to our new block, we also did CP with our neighbours. We gave our immediate neighbours cakes to thank them for bearing with the inconvenience during the renovation. Even after 10 years, our neighbours remember us for that gesture. I believe that CP with neighbours creates a lasting impression and offers opportunities for us to share God’s love.

CP is an effective way to connect with strangers. Years ago, I befriended Danny at the Maplewoods Park while doing exercise. Danny and his family started to visit our church and today, he is serving actively as a cell leader and is an Elder Observer in the Elders Board.

Jesus’ teaching in John 9:4 is a vivid reminder for us.

“I must work the works of Him who sent Me, while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work.”

We can experience God’s blessings when we partner with Him in His kingdom work. Would you allow God to work through you and co-write His Stories? Engaging in CP with your neighbours is doable. Let’s learn to be a real neighbour, and be the salt and the light to the community.

Love, your neighbour

P.S. See Chuan is an Elder in the Elders Board and also a ZP. He has a great passion for Community Pastoring.
